Mary Cabot Wheelwright, a Bostonian, and Hastiin Klah, a Navajo singer and medicine man, founded this museum in 1937 after years of working together to create a permanent record of Navajo ceremonial knowledge — song, narrative, sandpainting. Their chosen architect modeled the building on the hogan, the traditional Navajo home and ceremonial setting. Klah blessed the ground but died before the museum opened. It remains devoted to Native American arts, with collections documenting Navajo art and culture and changing exhibitions drawn from across Native traditions.
