New Mexico State Capitol (Roundhouse)

Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

The only circular state capitol in the United States was built between 1964 and 1966, designed by local architect W.C. Kruger to resemble the Zia sun symbol when viewed from above — four entrance wings radiating from a cylindrical core. Inside, the rotunda floor holds a turquoise and brass mosaic of the Great Seal of New Mexico; the skylight above it is patterned after an Indian basket weave. New Mexico has been governing from this spot, in one form or another, since 1610.
