Hanging Lake

National Register of Historic Places
Good forOutdoor lovers

The lake shouldn't exist where it does. Hanging Lake formed when a fault line sheared roughly an acre and a half of valley floor away from the canyon wall, leaving a shallow travertine basin suspended on the cliffs of Glenwood Canyon, about seven miles east of Glenwood Springs. Carbonate minerals dissolved in the water give it that turquoise color. The 1.2-mile trail gains a thousand feet. A permit is required. Go anyway.
