Galveston's first streetcar ran in 1868, pulled by mules. Electric trolleys followed in 1891, ran until 1938, and the tradition lay dormant until 1988, when the current heritage line opened connecting the Strand District to the Seawall. Hurricane Ike shut it down in 2008. The city spent thirteen years getting it back — restoring the four diesel-electric cars, reopening in October 2021. The trolley now runs Wednesdays through Sundays. Come for the ride itself: 6.8 miles of track, a working piece of a city that has rebuilt itself more than once.
