Galveston's Sacred Heart Catholic Church

National Register of Historic Places
Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

The 1900 storm erased Galveston's original Sacred Heart Church, which Nicholas Clayton had opened on January 17, 1892. The congregation rebuilt on the same corner of 14th Street and Broadway, completing a new structure in 1903–1904. Clayton — the same architect — was called back after the 1915 hurricane to redesign the dome. The result, blending Gothic, Moorish, and Byzantine influences, stands on the National Register of Historic Places, bright white against a boulevard that has lost far more than it kept.
