San Francisco Peaks

Good forOutdoor lovers

The San Francisco Peaks rise north of Flagstaff as the remnant of a single, prehistorically larger stratovolcano. Humphreys Peak, at 12,633 feet, is the highest point in Arizona. The Navajo call the range Dookʼoʼoosłííd — "the summit that never melts" — and regard it as their sacred mountain of the west. The Hopi know it as the home of the katsinam, the ancestor spirits who become clouds. Multiple tribes across the region consider it sacred ground. An aquifer within the caldera supplies much of Flagstaff's water below.
