Carrie Buck (Notable Resident)

Born in Charlottesville on July 2, 1906, Carrie Buck was raped by her foster family's nephew, committed by a Charlottesville court on January 23, 1924, and forcibly sterilized under Virginia's Eugenical Sterilization Act. The Supreme Court upheld the practice in *Buck v. Bell* (1927), with Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes writing "three generations of imbeciles are enough." Virginia Governor Mark R. Warner offered the Commonwealth's formal apology in 2002, when a historical marker was erected in Charlottesville where she was born.
