Built in 1915–1916 as a Colonial Revival brick schoolhouse and named for William Holmes McGuffey — the University of Virginia professor of moral philosophy who authored the first standard American reader series — the building closed as a public school in 1973. Two years later it reopened as an artist-run cooperative. Today it houses more than 45 renting artists, 100-plus associate members, and rotating exhibitions in galleries open to the public. The building earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
