Beta Bridge tells you what you need to know. Built in 1923 as part of a citywide paving project, the Rugby Road span over the railroad tracks has been painted by students since 1926 — layers accumulating until 2007, when a slab peeled off under its own weight. The historic district it anchors runs from University Avenue north through architecturally significant houses that began as single-family homes and became the center of UVA's fraternity and sorority system. William Faulkner lived here during his residency at the university.
