James Monroe laid the cornerstone here on October 6, 1817, making this the first building constructed on Jefferson's Lawn — the starting point from which the other nine pavilions followed. Since 1907, it has housed the Colonnade Club, the university's faculty club. The oldest building on the Lawn, still in use.
