He came to UVA in 1957 as the university's first Writer-in-Residence — the 1949 Nobel laureate accepting an English department invitation, then returning for a second term in 1958. He stayed. He became a library consultant, then a lecturer in American literature, and divided his time between Charlottesville and Oxford, Mississippi, until his death in 1962. Most of his sessions with students and audiences were recorded. You can still hear them.
