Between July 25 and August 5, 1927, Ralph Peer of the Victor Talking Machine Company set up a temporary recording studio on the third floor of the Taylor-Christian Hat and Glove Company on State Street — the road that is itself the Tennessee-Virginia state line. Over twelve days, he recorded 76 songs by 19 artists, including the commercial debuts of Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family. In 1998, Congress recognized Bristol as the birthplace of country music. The Birthplace of Country Music Museum opened here in 2014.
