Historic Downtown Bristol (State Street District)

State Street runs down the middle of this place — literally. The state line between Virginia and Tennessee cuts along the road itself, making Bristol's downtown a single commercial district that belongs, simultaneously, to two states. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, the district covers about 23 acres and includes 106 primary buildings, roughly 80 percent of them contributing resources dating from approximately 1890 to 1952 — two- and three-story masonry commercial structures that have held their integrity. Come for the architecture; stay because the street itself is the border.
