South Sister Summit

The third-highest peak in Oregon tops out at 10,358 feet — and unlike most of the Cascade volcanoes, it doesn't require technical climbing gear to reach the summit. The route runs roughly 12 miles round-trip from Devil's Lake trailhead, gaining close to 5,000 feet through the Three Sisters Wilderness. Above treeline, the trail passes Moraine Lake before a final steep scramble up loose red gravel to the crater rim. An overnight wilderness permit is required for camping; day hikers need only show up ready to work.
