Broken Top

Good forOutdoor lovers

Broken Top stopped erupting roughly 100,000 years ago, but the glaciers that moved in afterward kept working. What they left behind — a breached crater, a hollowed cone, the interior of a stratovolcano laid open to the sky — sits at 9,177 feet in the Three Sisters Wilderness, 20 miles west of Bend. Two small glaciers, Bend and Crook, still occupy the peak and continue to retreat. The hiking trail begins at Green Lakes Basin, runs 12 miles, and gains 3,450 feet. Bring an ice axe in winter.
