San Miguel Mission

The claim is simple and the debate is older than the country: San Miguel Chapel may be the oldest church building still standing in the continental United States. Originally built around 1610 to serve the native population living across the Santa Fe River from the Spanish settlement, it was burned in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, rebuilt by 1710, and is still offering Mass. The bell that hung in its tower before 1872 — on display inside — bears a date historians have long contested. The argument alone is worth the visit.
