La Fonda on the Plaza

National Register of Historic Places

The site has held an inn since 1609 — making it older than the United States, older than the state of New Mexico, planted at the terminus of both the Old Santa Fe Trail and El Camino Real. The current building dates to 1922, designed in the Pueblo Revival style, drawing on the adobe architecture of the region's indigenous Pueblo peoples. The Santa Fe Railway purchased it in 1925 and commissioned local muralists; Mary Colter redesigned the interior with exposed vigas and Mexican tiles, a tone the hotel still carries.
