The older church collapsed in the winter of 1792–93 — a disgrace, the governor called it — and the community rebuilt. What went up the following year has stood ever since: adobe walls, a cruciform plan, continuous use for over two centuries. Under Bishop Lamy, the church was remodeled with Gothic Revival spires and a new altar painted to look like marble. Administration passed from Franciscans to diocesan clergy to Jesuits and back again. The building outlasted all of them. It remains an active parish on the north side of Old Town Plaza in Albuquerque.
