Nicolai Fechin acquired an adobe property in Taos in 1927, moved in, and by March 1928 had concluded the two-story, eight-room structure failed him — functionally and aesthetically. The family labored to remake it for the next five years, with Fechin carving columns, stair rails, doors, and furniture by hand, communicating his designs to Taos Pueblo masons through a cardboard model. By 1933, the result was what the museum's own account calls a masterpiece of Southwest architecture. It now houses the Taos Art Museum, with Fechin's work alongside paintings from the Taos Society of Artists.
