Petroglyph National Monument

Good forOutdoor loversHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

The West Mesa escarpment on Albuquerque's western edge holds an estimated 24,000 petroglyphs carved into volcanic basalt by Ancestral Pueblo peoples and early Spanish settlers — some dated as far back as 3,000 years ago. Authorized in 1990, the monument spans 17 miles and is jointly managed by the National Park Service and the City of Albuquerque. Four visitor areas provide access to the carvings. The monument is free to enter, though parking fees apply at Boca Negra Canyon.
