Art Beal bought a hillside lot in Cambria in 1928 and spent most of the next 50 years building his "castle on a hill" from beer cans, abalone shells, car parts, and whatever Cambria was throwing away — he worked as the town's garbage collector. The result, earned California Historical Landmark No. 939 in 1986. As of early 2026, the site is closed to the public, fenced off with no-trespassing signs. What Beal made still stands on Hillcrest Drive, whether anyone gets in to see it or not.
