Teatro La Perla, Ponce

National Register of Historic Places
Good forLive-music fansHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

On 28 May 1864, Teatro La Perla opened in Ponce with a play by the Mallorcan writer Juan Palou y Coll — and it has been earning its name, the second oldest theater in Puerto Rico, ever since. The 1918 earthquake badly damaged it; it was rebuilt using the original plans and reopened in 1941. A six-column neoclassical facade remained through all of it. Today it seats 1,047 and hosts concerts, opera, plays, and school graduations. The lobby holds a small museum. Go to both.
