Monumento al Jíbaro Puertorriqueño

Sculptor Tomás Batista completed this government monument to the Puerto Rican jíbaro between 1973 and December 1976. The statue stands on Puerto Rico Highway 52 at kilometer post 49, in Barrio Lapa, Salinas — geographically precise, placed where the humid central mountains give way to the island's dry southern zone. The monument is accessible only from the southbound lanes, and the rest area alongside it is the only roadway rest stop in Puerto Rico. The jíbaro — the rural farmer whose traditions shaped Puerto Rican food, music, and daily life — rarely gets a monument. This one earns its place on the highway.
