When 80 percent of Texas doctors had less than a year of formal medical training, Galveston answered. Established in 1891 as the state's first medical school, UTMB grew from one building and 23 students to more than 70 buildings and 2,500 students. The original structure — the Ashbel Smith Building, still called Old Red — was designed by Galveston architect Nicholas J. Clayton and remains the oldest surviving medical school building in Texas. It's still there. Go see it.
