The oleander arrived on Galveston Island in 1841, brought from Jamaica by a merchant named Joseph Osterman. His sister-in-law, Mrs. Isadore Dyer, propagated it and gave cuttings to neighbors, who gave them to theirs. After the 1900 hurricane killed more than six thousand people, the plant pushed back through the rubble and bloomed. Galveston has called itself the Oleander City ever since.
