The only private home in the United States designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site sits on an 850-foot peak in the Southwest Mountains, three miles southeast of Charlottesville. Jefferson began designing it after inheriting the land at fourteen; work started in 1768 and continued until his death in 1826. The house was built using free workers, indentured servants, and enslaved people. In 1923, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation purchased it for $500,000 and operates it still.
