Good forOutdoor loversHistory buffs

Rising to 1,575 feet in Albemarle County, Carters Mountain sits among the Southwest Mountains southeast of Charlottesville. The mountain takes its name from Secretary John Carter, who obtained a patent for more than 9,000 acres here in the eighteenth century. A working apple orchard now occupies the slopes, and the Saunders-Monticello Trail reaches a summit overlook where Charlottesville spreads out below.
