Good forHistory buffs
The mine opened in 1878, found modest gold and some copper, and made its real money selling iron pyrite — fool's gold — for sulfuric acid production. It closed in 1904, reopened during World War I when demand for iron and sulfur spiked, then shut for good when the war ended. Decades later, explorers renovating the property found a single damaged miner's boot inside, and the name stuck. Today it runs guided underground tours and gem panning, Memorial Day through Labor Day.
