Treue der Union Monument

National Register of Historic Places
Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

On August 10, 1866, residents of Comfort, Texas dedicated a twenty-foot limestone obelisk to the thirty-four German-Texans killed at the 1862 Nueces massacre — conscientious objectors who refused to sign loyalty oaths to the Confederacy and were ambushed, then executed, while attempting to flee to Mexico. Built with donations from local families, the monument stands over the mass grave where most of the victims are buried. The flag flying here has thirty-six stars.
