Sisterdale — Old Sisterdale Store

Sisterdale was settled in 1847 by German surveyor and freethinker Nicolaus Zink, and the people who followed him were not ordinary frontier settlers. They were Forty-Eighters — intellectuals and abolitionists who had fled the failed revolutions in the German states and brought their politics with them into the Hill Country. The Sisterdale Valley District, which includes the old store among its historic buildings, sits on the National Register of Historic Places, a formal acknowledgment that what was built here — and what was argued here — was worth keeping.
