On May 8, 1846, 120 German immigrants founded Fredericksburg, and what they built has largely survived. The historic district holds over 700 historically significant structures, several dating to the 1840s, with limestone becoming the dominant building material for both commercial and residential construction. Among the most distinctive are the Sunday Houses — small townhouses that outlying farmers kept in town for weekend church visits. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 14, 1970.
