The original Vereins Kirche — church, school, and meeting hall at once — stood in the middle of Fredericksburg's Main Street from 1847 until it was demolished in 1897. The octagonal replica standing on Marktplatz today was built in 1935 through a partnership between the Gillespie County Historical Society and the Works Progress Administration. It now operates as a museum telling the story of both buildings and the German settlers behind them.
