Chippewa Square

National Register of Historic Places
Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

Laid out in 1815, Chippewa Square takes its name from American soldiers killed in the Battle of Chippawa during the War of 1812. At its center stands the James Oglethorpe Monument, sculpted by Daniel Chester French and designed by architect Henry Bacon, unveiled in 1910 — Oglethorpe faces south, sword drawn, toward Spanish Florida. The square earned a different kind of fame when the bench scenes from the 1994 film *Forrest Gump* were shot on its north side; the fiberglass prop bench now lives at the Savannah History Museum.
