Madison Square

National Register of Historic Places
Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

Laid out in 1837 on Bull and Macon Streets, Madison Square takes its name from the fourth president of the United States. At its center stands the William Jasper Monument, an 1888 work by Alexander Doyle honoring the sergeant who, mortally wounded during the Siege of Savannah in 1779, still managed to recover his company's banner. A cannon marks where Georgia's first highways began. The oldest building on the square, the Sorrel-Weed House, dates to 1840.
