Acoma Pueblo (Sky City)

Atop a 367-foot sandstone mesa roughly 65 miles west of Albuquerque, Acoma Pueblo has been continuously inhabited since at least the 12th century — making it one of the oldest continuously occupied communities in North America. Access once required climbing hand-cut stairs carved directly into the sandstone. Fewer than 50 tribal members live on the mesa year-round today; tours are guided by Acoma community members themselves, which is the right way to do it.
