John Crosby founded the Santa Fe Opera in 1956 and opened its first season on July 3, 1957, on a former guest ranch seven miles north of downtown. A 1967 fire destroyed the original theater; the company finished that season in a local high school gymnasium before rebuilding. The current Crosby Theatre, open since 1998, seats 2,128 and keeps its sides open to the surrounding landscape.
