Harwood Museum of Art

Before it was a museum, the building on Ledoux Street was Taos's only library — Lucy Harwood putting books on her front porch, serving lemonade to anyone who came to read. Founded in 1923, the Harwood Museum of Art now holds over 1,700 works spanning the Taos Society of Artists, the Taos Moderns, Hispanic traditions, and contemporary art. Its Agnes Martin Gallery — seven paintings, installed by the artist herself, the only such installation in the world — is what people compare to the Rothko Chapel. That comparison is earned.
