National Register of Historic Places
Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

The Pueblo of Giusewa was established in the Jemez Valley around AD 1350, its name drawn from the natural hot springs there. By 1621, Franciscan missionaries and their Jemez converts had raised the San José de los Jémez Mission — walls eight feet thick, built in the Western Baroque style. The Jemez joined the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, and the Spanish were gone from northern New Mexico for the next twelve years.
