The west of Puerto Rico has wanted a real museum for decades — since the 1960s, at least, when the Universidad de Puerto Rico's Mayagüez campus began acquiring art. MUSA opened in February 2016 and now holds the region's principal collection: works by local, Caribbean, and Latin American artists, a substantial body of archaeological objects from indigenous cultures, and dedicated collections centered on Mayagüez artist Marcos Irizarry and botanist Agustín Stahl.
