Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station

National Register of Historic Places
Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

On August 16, 1918, Keeper John Allen Midgett Jr. and his crew pulled forty-two crew members from the burning British tanker Mirlo after a German torpedo struck her five miles offshore — and King George V sent gold medals. That rescue made Chicamacomico famous. What makes it worth the drive today is that the station complex in Rodanthe is the most complete United States Life-Saving Service site in the nation, and every Thursday in summer the crew still runs the Beach Apparatus Drill, Lyle Gun and all.
