The name itself comes from a Twana myth: a man named Dos-wail-opsh, turned into a mountain at the river's source. That river runs down from the Olympic Mountains, crosses under Highway 101 at Brinnon, and empties into Hood Canal — and the 425 acres at that confluence became Dosewallips State Park. Elk winter in the meadows. Four salmon and steelhead species spawn in the river. The estuary, subject to ongoing habitat restoration, is the whole reason to be here.
