Fort Worden State Park

The guns here never fired a hostile shot. Fort Worden, a U.S. Army Coast Artillery base constructed between 1898 and 1920 on the northeastern tip of the Olympic Peninsula, was built alongside two other forts to form a "Triangle of Fire" guarding the entrance to Puget Sound — and spent its entire active life, through 1953, waiting for an enemy fleet that never came. Washington State converted it to a park, opened in 1973. The abandoned gun batteries are open for exploration. The Victorian officers' quarters are available to rent.
