University of Mary Washington Campus Historic Core

The University of Mary Washington was founded in 1908 and named for the mother of George Washington, who lived across the Rappahannock at Ferry Farm during his boyhood. Fredericksburg had functioned as a frontier trading post at the fall line of the river, a practical site for moving tobacco downriver and manufactured goods back inland.

The school opened as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women, training teachers in a state that had spent the previous half-century recovering from the Civil War. Fredericksburg itself had been a battlefield in 1862, shelled and occupied, its infrastructure destroyed. By the early twentieth century, the town was rebuilding around institutions like this one.

From 1944 to 1972, Mary Washington operated as the women's college of the University of Virginia. It became coeducational in the early 1970s, reorganized as an independent college, and was renamed University of Mary Washington by the Virginia General Assembly in 2004 after adding graduate programs and additional campuses beyond the main historic core in Fredericksburg.

Phi Beta Kappa established a chapter here in 1971 — the nation's oldest academic honor society, a signal of the institution's standing. In 2010, the university formalized colleges of business and education alongside the original college of arts and sciences.

The campus sits 42 miles south of Washington, D.C., and 53 miles north of Richmond, a position that shaped its identity as a commuter-accessible liberal arts university. Students still move between those cities for internships and work.
