The line opened September 17, 1901, built by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway to connect Williams, Arizona, to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park — 64 miles of track that made the canyon accessible and helped build the Grand Canyon Village around it. Passenger service ended in July 1968. Private investors bought the line in 1988, restored it, and ran the first train again on September 17, 1989 — the same date, 88 years later. It runs daily, year-round, and the entire railroad is on the National Register of Historic Places.
