Between AD 1150 and 1350, the Sinagua — ancestors of the Hopi — built what became one of the largest cliff dwellings in Red Rock country, tucking rooms against canyon walls, hunting deer and rabbit in the surrounding land, and tending crops nearby. Archaeologist Jesse Walter Fewkes of the Smithsonian gave the site its name: Honanki, from the Hopi word for "badger house" — though the Hopi themselves had no specific name for it. The site holds an estimated 72 rooms. A self-guided trail is open daily; no reservation required.
