Wupatki National Monument

The eruption of Sunset Crater — sometime between 1040 and 1100 — blanketed this stretch of northern Arizona in volcanic ash and turned marginal land into something worth fighting over. People came. They built. Wupatki Pueblo rose to more than 100 rooms and held the northernmost ballcourt ever discovered in North America. By 1225, the site was permanently abandoned. The Hopi believe the people who lived and died here remain as spiritual guardians, and clan members return periodically to deepen their understanding of their own history. That's not tourism. That's obligation.
