Watkins Glen International Raceway

Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

The track sitting at the southern tip of Seneca Lake didn't start with grandstands. Cameron Argetsinger organized the first Watkins Glen Grand Prix in 1948 on 6.6 miles of public roads through town, spectators standing on sidewalks. After a fatal accident in 1952, racing moved to a permanent hilltop course. For twenty consecutive years — 1961 through 1980 — it hosted the Formula One United States Grand Prix. The facility is now owned by NASCAR and still runs.
