National Historic Landmark

The carpenter who helped build this house in 1816 later led a religion. That's the kind of detail that stops you cold. John C. Jeffries and his apprentice Brigham Young raised the core brick structure for Judge Elijah Miller — whose daughter would marry William Henry Seward, future governor of New York, U.S. senator, and the man who bought Alaska from Russia in 1867. The house stayed in the family until 1951. It's open for guided tours on South Street in Auburn.
