Penn Yan sits at the northeast tip of Keuka Lake, its name a compression of the early settlers who argued over it — Pennsylvania versus Yankee — and eventually split the difference. The historic district covers 65 acres and 281 structures, 210 of them contributing, ranging from Federal and Greek Revival to Queen Anne and Second Empire. Birkett Mills, operating since 1797, anchors one corner. The district was listed on the National Register in 1985.
