Denmark Vesey House

National Register of Historic Places
Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

The house at 56 Bull Street wasn't built until sometime between the 1830s and 1840s — after Denmark Vesey was already dead. Modern research has shown that the actual address where he lived was long since demolished. What remains is a landmark to the man rather than his home: a free Black carpenter who won $1,500 in a city lottery in 1799, purchased his freedom, helped found what became Mother Emanuel AME Church, and organized what would have been the largest slave uprising in American history. He was hanged in 1822. The building stands. The story holds.
